Adaikalamadha shrine, Elakurichi, is three hundred years old, built by the great Veera Ma Munivar. He lived in Elakurichi nearly for twenty two years. Arrived as missionary, Veramamuniver mastered Tamil Literature with such erudition that he authored 36 Tamil books in his 36 years of stay in India and translated Thirukural into Latin Language.

Elakurichi is situated in Ariyalur District. It is just 30 kms away from Thanjavour and also from Ariyalur and nine km away from Perambalore, Mana Madurai national highways. People from far and wide in and out of India visit this shrine throughout the year.

Historical Importance

Elakurichi has high historical significance. It was here that Rev.Fr.Beschi (Veramamuniver) composed all his master pieces like Thembavani, Thirkavalour Kalambakam and other grammar books, comparative dictionaries in Tamil, Latin, Portuguese and French.

Senthamize kalluri

He established Senthamizh kalluri to provide higher education. Kalluri, a new Tamil word coined by him (kalvi+uoori).
Thembavani is as good as Kammba Ramayanam. He took pride when he explained to Tamil scholars that he employed more sndhams (rims) than Kambar himself. He pioneered in different fields of Tamil and revolutionized Tamil alphabets. The changes that he brought into Tamil alphabets three hundred years before is still followed.

Pioneering works in Tamil Literature
He was the first to write short stories (Pramartha Guru Khadai), first to write grammar for spoken Tamil (Kodunthamizh Elakkanam), first to create dictionary ( Sadhur Agarathi), first to compile Comparative Dictionary in four languages (Tamil, Latin, Portuguese and French), first to translate two chapters of ‘Thirukural’ namely Arathupal and Porudpal into Latin. He wrote most of his master pieces staying at the feet of Adaikalamadha, Elakurichi. He called Mother Mary ‘Adaikkala Annai’ a pure Tamil name and named the campus as Thirukavalour, meaning ‘Village in God’s Protection’.
Padal Petrra Thiruthalam
Elakurichi-Thirukavalour is the one and only Padal Petrra Phiruthalam (shrine) in Tamil speaking Christian world. To honor Adaikalamadha he wrote several books, Thirukavalour Kalambakam, Adaikala Malai, Adaiklanayagi Venkalippa, and Annai Azhungal Andhadi.

King of Ariyalour, Arrangappa Mazhavaroya Nyinar suffered from cancer (Raja Pilavai) for more than seven years. Abandoned by all the doctors, griped with the fear of death he came to Elakurichiy that belonged to his kingdom, approaching Fr. Beschi to cure the incurable.
As Fr. Beschi was in search of herbals he found a miraculous spring instead. It is where Madha Kulam stands today. He firmly believed in the Divine intervention and picked up some soil mixed with water and applied on the mole. The king went back with faith. He who spent sleepless nights in pain and fear for years, slept like a child. As he woke up in the morning he did not find any trace of his sickness. What the doctors could not heal, Adaikala Madha healed.

The grateful King of Ariyalur thanked Our Blessed Mother granting 175 acres of land for his miraculous cure.
